SolidWorks 2012 New Feature – Costing

One of the new things in SolidWorks 2012 is a costing feature that allows you to determine the cost of manufacturing your design. Here is part of the CAD Cops skit that was enacted on stage at SolidWorks World 2011 explaining the feature.

What a slick new feature!! Really sends the message of what is costs to make something!!!!

Interesting… Did SolidWorks say whether they developed this technology or whether they partnered with someone as they did with PE International with their Sustainability module?

I don’t remember anything being mentioned about the source of this technology

We did it internally based on input from customers.

Does this just work with sheet metal parts or all kids of parts (Machined, welded, etc)

such a feature was always present with the DFX jiant Boothroyd Dewhurst, but bringing it into SW is really gr8

It may look slick but I’ve tried it the cost estimates it produces are way off and not reliable at all.

My company is a distributor of SW and what I was told is that they tried to partner with a few of the more established cost estimating software providers in the market but none of them wanted to form a partnership…so SW tried to produce something on their own. Several of my clients have tried it but results have been very unreliable.
