Solido Up

This is a sequel to my earlier post titled “Solido Down“. Looks like Solido managed to get its web site back up and running again. However, it also looks like nobody has been maintaining the web site for a while. The content is hopelessly outdated. It still mentions SolidWorks co-founder Scott Harris as a member of the company’s board of directors.

When I met Scott recently at SolidWorks World 2011 and asked him about Solido, he couldn’t tell me much since he was no longer associated with the company.

There are some unconfirmed reports floating around that a certain company is interested in buying what’s left of Solido. I hope that deal goes through because I do believe that Solido has some real nice 3D printing technology that could be very helpful to our industry. I still have the sample parts that Solido CEO and founder Jason Barzilay gave me at the Solido booth at SolidWorks World 2010. See “SolidWorks World 2010 (Day 1) – Solido 3D Printer for $2950 only“.

    Hi Deelip,

For today, the cheapest 3D printer is Solido. I hope the company will run ( again ). I am looing for another affordable printer, but found Dimension uPrint Personal 3D Printers at USD 14.900. Very high compare to Solido. But looks like Dimension uPrint Personal 3D Printers give more good result.

After their website recovered from the outage I noticed the text of Solido’s About Us page omitted any mention of Israel, “Solido is headquartered in USA, China and Italy, with partners and distributors located worldwide.”

I couldn’t remember what it had said previously, but in the Internet Archive I located a capture of Solido’s web site as of June 2010 that contained an earlier revision of the sentence, “Solido is incorporated and headquartered in Israel with partners and distributors located worldwide.”

I don’t know if they made this revision during the outage or if it was just coincidental timing. But, undeniably, some time between June 2010 and March 2011 Solido’s corporate description changed from “…incorporated and headquartered in Israel” to “…headquartered in USA, China and Italy.”

A small revision, but provocative nevertheless.

In 2012 Solido’s web site went down again for a while, then it came back up with subtle changes: the logo has changed to read “Solid Model”, the news about financing has been replaced with a back-dated entry about a successor company, and there’s a link that has been generating traffic to my blog. (My stats do show I’ve been getting users referred from Solido’s web site.) A few new events were added in 2012.

But there’s still lots of out-of-date content. That old picture of Scott Harris is still there. And, amusingly, the news entry says my blog “was added to Success Stories” but it actually hasn’t been added to that section!

So the site obviously isn’t being thoroughly cleaned up, but some interested party is apparently making small tweaks.
